The American Man Who Defected to North Korea
In 2016, the North Korean officials released an interview of two men of American heritage that shocked the world. The video showcased two middle-aged white men speaking in perfect North Korean accent while praising their leader Kim Jong-Un and rebuking the United States of America. Although the American officials refused to comment on this video, it was later revealed that they were Ted and James Dresnok; the sons of James Joseph Dresnok, the American man who defected to North Korea in 1962.
Background
James Joseph Dresnok (1941–2016) was an American soldier deployed in South Korea in the 1960s. Having already served in West Germany for 2 years, Dresnok enlisted again to be deployed after finding out that his then-wife was with another man. Having experienced the divorcement of his parents at a young age, Dresnok took the affair as an act of betrayal.
